Big news for founders in Washington County: The Valley is now an affiliate incubator partner of Innovate 518, the Capital Region Innovation Hot Spot.
That means our little corner of the 518 now has a more direct connection into the region's startup network, business-building resources, and Hot Spot certification pathway. You can find The Valley listed with Innovate 518's regional incubators and accelerators, alongside partners supporting entrepreneurs across the Capital Region.
For Cambridge, Washington County, and the founders building from here, this is a real step forward.
A front door for Washington County founders
Entrepreneurs here should not have to feel like the startup ecosystem starts somewhere else. Not in Albany. Not in Saratoga. Not only in a university lab, venture office, or downtown coworking space an hour away.
Those places matter. The regional network matters. But founders also need a local place where the first conversation can happen close to home, with people who understand the realities of building from a rural community.
That is what this affiliation makes possible. The Valley can now serve as a clearer local front door into Innovate 518: a place where founders can start with free Office Hours, talk through what they are building, get oriented, find the right resources, and, when appropriate, explore whether Hot Spot certification could apply.
More than a building
Innovate 518 makes an important point on its partners page: incubation is not just about having a building. It is about helping technology entrepreneurs get the services, relationships, and support they need to grow.
The Valley does have a home at 9 West Main Street in Cambridge. It is a place to work, meet, test ideas, host conversations, and be around other people building useful things. Founders can book a desk or conference room, but the larger promise is what happens through the space: business model work, founder support, practical workshops, warm referrals, regional connections, and help figuring out the next right move.
Some of that is already visible in the work The Valley is building: Office Hours for the first useful conversation, Design Sprints and Facilitated Field Days for founders and teams who need evidence from the real world, Growth Advisor support when a company needs senior go-to-market help, and Student Studio and community workshops that give local people a way to learn by doing.
Innovate 518 describes its affiliate partners as having different areas of focus, expertise, clientele, and culture. That is exactly why Washington County belongs in the network. Rural founders, rural operators, and rural problems bring a different kind of knowledge to the table. The Valley's job is to make that knowledge visible and help turn it into companies that can grow.
What founders can tap into
Through the Innovate 518 network, startups can connect with support that may include funding referrals, expert guidance, mentors, pitch practice, university and student connections, networking events, shared services, vendor relationships, and other regional resources.
Early-stage companies rarely need only one thing. One founder may need help sharpening a customer segment. Another may need an accountant or grant lead. Another may need a mentor, a student intern, a university contact, a workspace, or just a room where the questions get better.
The Valley's programs are meant to make those next steps easier to name. Office Hours can sort the first question. A Design Sprint can turn a risky assumption into a customer conversation, useful artifact, field test, and decision. A Facilitated Field Day can bring the right people around one rural workflow. Student Studio can connect a real brief with young people learning through work that matters. And as Rural Pitch Days develop, the goal is to pair small checks with specific rural milestones, not pitch theater.
The point of this affiliation is simple: it should now be easier for Washington County founders to find those next steps without losing their local anchor.
And yes, there may be tax benefits
There is also a concrete program benefit here. Eligible companies that become members in good standing of an Innovate 518-affiliated incubator may be able to pursue Innovation Hot Spot certification and related New York State tax benefits.
Those benefits can include up to a five-year window of corporate tax benefits or, in certain circumstances, personal income tax elimination credits, along with a credit or refund of the 4% New York State sales and use tax. Eligibility depends on the company and the program requirements, so founders should review the Innovate 518 Hot Spot forms and documents and talk with an accountant or tax advisor.
The tax benefit is important. But it is not the whole story. The bigger story is that Washington County now has a local incubator pathway into a regional innovation system, backed by programs that can help founders do the next useful thing.

The Valley will be able to share local events through the Innovate 518 calendar, bring more regional visibility to Washington County entrepreneurship, and help more founders understand where they fit in the broader 518 startup ecosystem.
