Seven Minutes of Google Maps Wins

A workshop distilled local search into tactics a Main Street business could apply immediately, starting with consistent business information.

By Charles Dill

Thank you to everyone who joined us at The Valley for the Google Maps workshop.

Andrew Flynn, Cambridge local, and growth consultant to Fortune 100 brands, shared practical tactics you can apply today:

Here were the top takeaways:

• Take a NAP to gain Google’s trust: Keep your Name, Address, and Phone exactly the same everywhere. Even small differences (“Your Business” vs. “Your Business Inc.”) can reduce visibility.

• Words move money: A simple 3‑word change on a button drove a major click‑through lift. Your Google listing copy matters, headlines, descriptions, and services. Put time and effort into how you describe your business.

• Pick the right category: Choose the most specific primary category and add relevant services and attributes customers actually search. Pro tip, look up what category your competitors have put themselves in.

• Use photos that rank: Upload high‑quality, geographically accurate, and seasonally relevant, photos and keep them fresh monthly. Cambridge is full of talented photographers who can help you showcase your business at its best.

Who joined: Florists, artists, recreation businesses, an antique seller, a yoga instructor, and a wealth advisor. We had great questions and energy from across the Cambridge area.

Missed the event? Well don’t worry, because there will be one every Third Thursday at The Valley. Our events will have a focus on tech and entrepreneurship.
